On October 5th, 2022, user Most Mysterious 90s posted a short eight second snippet of the song to YouTube, giving it the placeholder name “This Summer”. The song was recorded off of Portland based community radio station KBOO in 1993 or 1994.

Multiple users in the comments started theorizing that the song was AI generated, due to how unusual it sounded. But other users in the comments noted how unlikely that would be, due to the OP posting several songs that were real. The OP explained why the snippets he recorded where so short, saying in the channel bio:

“In the first half of the 90s, I used to record tapes from the radio which consisted of mostly incomplete songs, usually very short snippets. I think the idea was to make a sort of weird radio sound-collage, and to create an audio snapshot of what was on the radio at the time, and to fit hundreds of songs onto a 60- or 90-minute tape.”

The OP responded to a comment asking why the snippet was so short and if it was chopped up on July 11th, 2023, he said:

Sometimes I would start recording and stop and start at different times in a song (weird, I know), but to me it doesn’t sound like I did that with this

On January 27th, 2024, the song was identified by YouTube user C_h_R_i_S as Zero Day by Walt Mink after finding the original upload in a playlist, thinking it sounded like the band, then found it after skimming through the songs in their first two albums,

Lyrics

(Interpretation by unknown, found on Genius)
[Verse 1]
A million little lightbulbs went on over the minds
Of the dogs and cats and bureaucrats who change what we see through our eyes
Yeah!
Like nothing went wrong

[Verse 2]
Deep in the rainforest a ritual occured
And somewhere in the embers of the funeral pyr
Something was done
So all our machines couldn’t run
Oh yeah

On zero day

[Verse 3]
It’s amazing how New York defends its city to the death
But now that the Earth is warmer you’ll all find yourself shorter of breath
Oh yeah
Shorter of breath
Oh yeah

On zero day

[Bridge]
And the weathermen will stop
And they’ll listen awhile for some sign of improving conditions
Remember the summers we spent by the sea
We would lie on our backs while the sun baked our bodies
First I’d lotion you, and then you’d lotion me
In the old days when sunlight was easy and free

[Outro]
A million little postcards were dropped into the mail
Shooby do-wop wa-pow!
