"Virgin Child of the Universe" is a 1977[1] gospel song-poem published by Ted Rosen's Halmark record label[2] in Massachusetts.[3] The song was written and copyrighted by Carrie & Bonnie Postell,[1] and most likely sung by Halmark vocalist Dodie Frost.[4]
Search history[]
In 2000, music historian/WFMU DJ Irwin Chusid released a compilation album titled Songs in the Key of Z. This album contained what he called "outsider music," which is music "made" by people who don't even know they are making music. This album contained an unidentified song titled "Virgin Child Of The Universe."
Legacy[]
The likely singer, Dodie B. Frost, went on to release her eponymous gospel album in 1982 with Mustard Seed Records. The Dodie Frost album contained such Christian songs as Slow Boat To Heaven, I Hear Jesus Calling Now, and I Praise Thee Lord.[5] She is also a fiction author based in Massachusetts.[6]
In 2000, it was re-released as the 9th track of the first volume from Songs In The Key Of Z. In the Songs In the Key of Z book, Irwin Chusid credited the songwriters as Carrie & Bonnie Postell and posited its release as between 1963 and 1979.
Circa 2005, music researcher Phil X. Milstein[7] described this song-poem as among the "masterpieces" of Ted Rosen's Halmark record label. He compared it to the label's other song-poems, "This World Is In A Hell Of A Fix," Adolph J.G. Babel's "My Feet Start Tapping" and "Silent Soundings Of My Music".[8]
In 2024, the rediscovery of Phil X. Milstein's 21st century research led internet users to identify Dodie Frost as the singer.[9]
The release date was confirmed in 2025 upon the rediscovery of the 1977 copyright record.[10]
Lyrics[]
Oh... Oh...
As the day comes to an end
The virgin child of the universe
Is swept up in the fierce drive
Of sexual encounters
Orgasmic explosion of love
Enhances the child
While a floodgate of love
Circles throughout Saturnate
The missing link of oaths of allegiance
Allegiance to love
Elucidates the child's destiny
Elucidates the child's destiny
How can she escape
This missing link
This missing link of destiny?
When is the turning point?
When is the turning point?
I say when
When is the turning point?
When is the turn...
