The Permanent Way is a formerly unidentified folk song by Ian Clark and Christopher Rowe, released in 1970 on the EP "Folk Train".

It was posted to YouTube on March 8th of 2010 by the user John Turner. The track was broadcasted on local radio in the early 70s and John Turner has not heard it since.

On April 8th, 2024, Reddit user "CactusTreant" posted:

"I can't find audio online but I'm quite certain it's "The Permanent Way" from this release, described in the liner notes as the "lament of a lonely A4 Pacific for the noble days of steam." https://www.discogs.com/release/7317070-Mike-Donald-Ian-Clark-Chris-Rowe-Folk-Train."

About a month later, full audio was posted to YouTube by "That one f9a".
