The Defended is a Scottish garage rock band from Glasgow and Perth. It consists of lead singer and guitarist Dave McCallum, guitarist Scott Chalmers, bassist Fraser Breingan, and drummer Louis "Lou Lou P" Pietranek. The band was originally active from 2006 to 2011[1], but have since reformed in 2024[2] following the attention they got from "Man on a Hill," formerly known to the lostwave community as "There's a Man."
History
When David went to Perth College UHI, he was already friends with Fraser. However, Fraser didn’t join the band when it first formed. At college, David met Scott and Louis, who would become the lead guitarist and drummer when the band formed in 2006. The first and second bassists were both called Stephen, one of which being Stephen Lane, who went on to have success on his own in Australia. When David, Louis, Scott and Stephen Lane formed their band in 2006, they were called The Social and gigged for a brief time under that name. However, there was already a signed band of the same name, and so they became The Defended in 2007. In 2008, Fraser joined the band to play bass for the last three years of their time studying music. Even though three of the songs on the Boys, Girls and Broken Hearts EP were written before Fraser joined, he plays on all four tracks. In 2011, personal life and work got in the way of rehearsing and gigging, and The Defended disbanded.
In 2024, upon hearing about the search for their lost song Man On A Hill (formerly There’s A Man), David, Scott, Fraser and Louis, who were all living in different cities as far as Dubai, were able to get back in contact with each other. David set up new social media accounts for The Defended and began posting old photos of the band from the 2000s. On 20th March, they posted an announcement. “The Defended have officially reformed and are working on new material.” On Friday 22nd, the Boys, Girls and Broken Hearts EP was re-released, and the band began posting clips and videos of the music they were working on. They currently have multiple new songs they are making and a few old recordings of songs from the 2000s.
