The song was first posted to the New Wave Outpost forums by user Guglielm on August 23rd, 2012 along with multiple other unknown songs. He didn’t provide any information about the songs.
On April 20th, 2013, Guglielm commented on the WFMU.org page for a playlist made by user Bob Brainen, saying the songs were recorded sometime between 1981-1984 or 1991-1993 off of WFMU.
Guglielm reposted the song to WatZatSong on July 20th, 2013, without providing any additional information about it.
On June 27th, 2014, Guglielm reposted the song to WatZatSong again along with a longer audio. According to him, the song was possibly made by someone named David Byron/Baren/Barron/Bearon, which he had speculated to also have been the same artist as Joe Will Never Be The Same, but however, no information about David could be found online.
On December 4th, 2014, Guglielm confirmed he recorded the song between 1991-1993, meaning JWNBTS was also likely recorded then.
2020s[]
On March 26th, 2023, Guglielm confirmed that he digitized all of his cassette tapes with the songs on them in the early 90s, and no longer had any of them anymore.
On May 3rd, 2024, user Geo posted a link to the YouTube channel of a musician named David Baron, theorizing that he could be the person behind the song. David’s music style sounded similar, and his music had apparently played on WFMU.
On June 6th, 2024, David Baron commented on Ziro's upload of the song, claiming that he made Joe Will Never Be The Same when he was a student in WFMU with his friend, Bill Berger, who was a DJ.
After he left the comment, Ziro asked him if he was also behind this song, which he had responded with yes. He also said that he had some cassettes with his old songs (including this one and Joe Will Never Be The Same), which he started to look for in the morning.
A day later, he found the cassettes and the title Ocean as the one associated with this song, and Joe Cauliflower was the title associated with Joe Will Never Be The Same.
On September 15th, 2024, David Baron uploaded the full version of Joe Will Never Be The Same, marking it as identified, however, this song isn’t, and still needs verification. But David confirmed he was planning on uploading the song soon, but never did.
On June 4th, 2025, David was contacted, and said that he forgot about posting the song, but said that he will soon. Due to lack of HQ audio it’s still only considered nearly solved.
Lyrics[]
You know you’ve got to believe me
I ain’t telling no lies
Love ain’t a word on the bookshelf
That I pull out when I’m high
I see no reason to leave you
I’ll always be by your side
And never think of me, darling
As a short-lived prize
Sympathy is not for me
And I have no jealousy
Take me down to the sea
To stay
We could live by the ocean
In a cottage no doubt
We could run by the moonlight
Makin’ music ourselves
And I’ll come home at night
And you’ll be there with me
Am I dreaming now
I just want you to see
You know you’ve got to believe me
I ain’t telling’ no lies
Love ain’t a word on the bookshelf
That I pull out when I’m high
