Not to be confused with Sacrifice.
Suffocated by Religion (formerly known as "Your Sacrifice", “You're So Self Absorbed”, "The Most Mysterious Death Metal Song", or "Yeah") is a formerly unidentified death metal/grindcore song by Belgian band Out In The Cold (previously Mindfart).[1]
Search History[]
On July 27th, 2020, Reddit user clipperjangle (Most Mysterious 90s/marktrail) first posted a 1:27 snippet of the song to the r/Lostwave subreddit where he'd inquire about its origins.[2] In his post, he stated that he'd recorded the song on cassette off of the community radio station KBOO in Portland, Oregon around 1996.
He then posted the snippet to YouTube on December 1st, 2021, under the title The Most Mysterious Death Metal Song on the Internet "yeah", coining the placeholder names "Yeah" and "The Most Mysterious Death Metal Song" respectively.[3]
The OP gave an explanation for why the snippets he recorded were so short, saying in his channel’s bio:
“In the first half of the 90s, I used to record tapes from the radio which consisted of mostly incomplete songs, usually very short snippets. I think the idea was to make a sort of weird radio sound-collage, and to create an audio snapshot of what was on the radio at the time, and to fit hundreds of songs onto a 60- or 90-minute tape.”
On June 19th, 2025, the song was positively identified by Discord users Numerophobe and Sonolux as Suffocated By Religion by Out In The Cold via WerZatSong.[4]
Though it was initially discovered as a feature in the 1996 compilation No Fate Vol. 2[5] by now-inactive Japanese label HG FACT,[6] it was first released in 1995 on the album What Will Remain[7] when the band was still going by Mindfart.
Debunked Leads[]
- Napalm Death: English grindcore band Napalm Death was suggested as a potential lead from the beginning of the search due to perceived similarities between their music and the snippet, though this proved unlikely when considering their popularity.[8][9] This lead would be debunked after the song was identified.
- Murdergod: Defunct death metal band from Portland, Oregon who released 3 demo albums between 1995 and 1996.[10] Investigation into Murdergod first began due to their roots in Portland and striking similarities their music shared with song, however the majority of their discography, (excluding God Destroyer[11] released in 1996), wasn't easily accessible online and quickly led to a dead end. This lead would be debunked after a Discord user had contacted an anonymous associate of Murdergod's former bassist[12] who confirmed they weren't responsible for the snippet.[13][14] Furthermore, the remaining 2 of Murdergod's releases were found, neither of which contained the song.[15][16]
Lyrics[]
I kinda feel like a piece of me is dying along with this church
Uh, you’re right about that
Destroyed youth caused by religion
Forced into by a so-called god
Wanted life false obligations
Lost memories of a time never had
Destroyed youth caused by religion
Forced into by a so-called god
Wanted life false obligations
Lost memories of a time never had
You
People too blind to see
People have no idea
Can’t see the lies
Just sacrifice
People too blind to see
People have no idea
Can't see the lies
Just sacrifice
Just sacrifice
Yeah
Out In The Cold[]
Out In The Cold was a Belgian deathgrind band from Bilzen, Limburg who first formed in 1995 after changing their name from Mindfart.[17] They were active between 1992-1995 as Mindfart and as Out In The Cold between 1995-1996.
Out In The Cold consisted of vocalist Stijn Verjans, guitarists Bert Parteons and Willy Bijtebier, drummer Kristof Timmermans, with Bijtebier, Bart Neven, and Vincent (credited as Vince on Promo '95)[18] all playing bass throughout their discography. Vincent was their last known bassist as of 1995 and his full name is currently unknown.
Their discography (as both Mindfart and Out In The Cold) consists of 6 albums total, 3 of which were split albums with other artists.[19] Their 1993 debut, Fairytale/Walls Around Us, was a split with Brazilian grindcore band Rot.[20]
