Somewhere in New York (formerly known as "Yo Yo Yo Ja Ja Ja", "Yo Yo Yo", or "Ja Ja Ja") is a formerly unidentified synth-pop/new wave song by German band Electrafive, released in 1981 on the album Picture.

Search History[]

On June 10th, 2023, user Kenny Cathead posted a one hour and 25 minute video titled “Unknown” to YouTube. It featured many snippets recorded off of the radio in the 1980s. The song played one hour, 20 minutes, and 50 seconds into the video.

On July 17th 2023, Kenny reposted the song to his WatZatSong account, NY80sTapes, posted one of his many snippets to his account. The snippet lasts for only sixteen seconds and, according to the comments from the OP, it was randomly recorded on the radio by another person.

On November 24th, 2023, on the FMM Discord thread for the songs he posted, Kenny said that he wasn’t the person who recorded the tapes, but instead a friend who was trying to make a sound collage, but he recorded a few things.

Sometime after, the snippet resurfaced in early 2024 by various YouTube uploads.

On June 23rd, 2024, the song got identified by user Bloost Media as "Somewhere in New York" by Electrafive. Bloost Media had solved it by searching up "Mitternachtsmusik 1981" into YouTube, hoping to find other NY80sTapes songs uploaded on the Mitternachtsmusik channel, as another NY80sTapes song, "Rita Jenrette" by The Cheesedogs, was also uploaded there.

Lyrics[]

[Verse 1]
I saw you in the war zone
You were on your own and trying
In this world, in this world
There's a shadow stand behind you
You're on your own and dying
In this world, in this world

[Pre-Chorus]
You go your own way, I'll go mine
Into the subway sect, you climb
Somewhere in New York

[Chorus]
I saw you fighting, somewhere in New York
I saw you fighting, somewhere
Somewhere in New York, I saw you fighting
Somewhere in New York, York, York, York, York

[Verse 2]
There's a thunder in your silence
Too tough to cry you're dying
In this world, in this world
I saw you running under neon
Intention city smiling, we survive
In this world

[Pre-Chorus]
You go your own way, I'll go mine
Oh-oh, you know we'll meet again in time
Somewhere in New York

[Chorus]
I saw you fighting, somewhere in New York
I saw you fighting, somewhere
Somewhere in New York, I saw you fighting
Somewhere in New York, York, York, York, York, York, York, York, York, York, York, York, York, York, York, York

[Bridge]
I saw you fighting

[Chorus]
I saw you fighting, somewhere in New York
I saw you fighting, somewhere
Somewhere in New York, I saw you fighting
Somewhere in New York, York, York, York, York, York, York, York, York, York, York, York, York, York, York, York
