Search history

November 2020-August 2022: Origins of the search

The song was posted to WatZatSong by user gymforma on November 28th, 2020. He didn’t provide any information about the song, nor a longer snippet. [1]

On August 28th, 2022, gymforma shared a slightly longer 33-second recording on MegaNZ, with filename "request 8.mp3". He shared that he got the song from a collector who we've now identified as NimzoAOR. [2]

June 2024: New discoveries & a longer snippet

On June 13th, 2024, a collection of 17 mix videos were found by Floptok, uploaded by a user "funky_vinyls_records" to DailyMotion. One of those mixes, uploaded on May 23, 2008, contains a longer ~47-second snippet of SITN starting at timestamp 6:13. [3]

In all, the 17 mixes contain 123 distinct song snippets, of which 120 are identified as of September 20th, 2024. The official tracking spreadsheet for funky_vinyls_records' unknowns is here, and more information about the remaining unknowns is here.

A slowed sample of the beginning to Giorge Pettus' song "One Time Affair" is featured at the end of the snippet this indicates that the song was pitch-edited, as confirmed by the fact that the track directly before SITN, "Something" by Lava, was sped up by 15 BPM and pitched F# major, instead of the original E♭ major key.

There has been ongoing confusion that NeonBlue80, who’s a member of the Lyon Funk community, is related to the original posting of SITN. This is now confirmed to be a misunderstanding; specifically NeonBlue is not funky_vinyls_records. It was previously theorized that he was gatekeeping the song, but he has confirmed that it’s not him, as well as stating that it was a translation error.

On September 20th, 2024, another song from a mix by the same user, Saw This Girl Tonight was identified. The song turned out to be Misfits Of Science - Can’t Touch You Now, despite being theorized to be from the 1980s, the song turned out to be from 1999. This lead people to theorize that this song might be from the 1990s or 2000s too.

Early-Mid 2025: More backstory to SITN & possible writers found

On February 5th, 2025, Discord user Nel80s managed to get in contact with funky_vinyls_records. They said they had downloaded the song off of a blog-post on a forum dedicated to AOR music, and that it was a part of a soundtrack. They said they’ll try to look for the song in their files, but the file was most likely deleted.

On May 23rd, 2025, Discord user Kutsu discovered a copyright registry for a song titled Somewhere In The Night by Ken Rose and Eric Pressly submitted in 1988 under SONY ATV Canada.

Ken was contacted by Discord user CimozzenKP, and since Eric is deceased, they contacted his family members, and Ken confirmed the song was written by them, stating:

That’s definitely our song, I have a very vivid memory of it because I was only sixteen years old and that is the first song I ever got signed with. It has to be from the demo Eric and I had floating around. I sadly can’t remember her name, but I have a vivid picture in my head to the singer. She was a one-off who sang on that song for me and nothing else. I’m glad to hear you’re also in touch with Eric’s family and their estate, so hopefully they may have something for you

Although there’s not many proof, it’s very likely that they’ve wrote the song.

Leads & Theories

  • After research and outreach, we're largely confident in the following reconstructed timeline:
    • DailyMotion on May 23th, 2008, as part of a mix video.
    • A member of the Lyon Funk community, who we've identified, scrapes part of the snippet and shares it with other people, asking about the origin of the song. This is where the 33-second snippet comes from.
    • NimzoAOR gets the snippet, and shares it with gymforma.
    • gymforma posts it to WatZatSong in 2020.

Lyrics

You know I’ve seen that look before
Inside you all along
Looking for the perfect one
Has left you on your own

You think you're running out of time
But time is on your side
Just when you think it's out of reach
It's right before your eyes

Somewhere in the night
Love's gonna find you
You won't have to cry another tear
You don't have to try so hard this time, girl
