2000s-2020s[]
The song was first posted to the New Wave Outpost forums’ song identification board on February 20th, 2005, by user Obscure80s. They said the song was recorded off of a radio station in the Baltimore-DC area from 1985-1991 along with five-six other songs. They didn’t provide any audio, but they wrote down the lyrics.
On June 11th, 2020, a 23-second, good quality snippet of the song was posted to SpiritOfRadio by user Jay. They said it was recorded in the Baltimore-DC area from either WCVT or WHFS between 1985-1991. Meaning that Jay and obscure80s are most likely the same person. They also said they weren’t sure if the band was local or not.[1]
On January 28th, 2021, Jay posted another snippet of the song to SpiritOfRadio. They said it was recorded off of WCVT in Towson, and they’ve been searching for the song for multiple decades[2]. This snippet is noticeably lower quality than the one they uploaded six months before.
Over time, the song was reuploaded to YouTube by multiple users, such as Fatbird, MistaEgg, Kaykij, Q, S2h, LostwaveTT, Creamwolf, Zumi, LostwaveFinder, AlianTheObscure, 𝑀𝑟. 𝐶ℎ𝑖𝑝𝑠, Just A Skipper, SpikeytheCactus, Murphy, Rocketballboi, and multiple others, amassing over 27k views.
On September 22nd, 2021, Jay posted another low quality snippet of the song to SpiritOfRadio, and included a Vocaroo link to the full song in the replies, but it was still in compressed quality[3]. Jay has since gone inactive.
2024-2025[]
On March 29th, 2024, an anonymous listener of the "WCTV" Facebook group asked user Skizz Cyzyk to post four videos of snippets this song and other unidentified song Take This Chance recorded with a phone. The anonymous user is most likely Jay.
On August 1st, 2024, the song was given a channel in the Fond My Mind Discord server. It was put in the "Other Unknown Songs (2)" category. It's theorized to be on a 12" record due to other songs posted by Jay being released in that format.
Exactly a year later, after unidentified song I Was A Fool In Love was moved to verification needed, the FMM Discord channel for the song was promoted to the "Other Unknown Songs (1)" category.
