Relax in Red (formerly known as “Relax in Bed”) is a formerly unidentified post-punk song by Long Island based band X-Offender. It appeared throughout the '80s on Paul McCartney & Wings bootleg audio tapes labeled Wings - Wild Wonders.
Search History[]
Sometime around 1987, bootleggers circulated the song on audio tapes, mislabeling it as a Paul McCartney & Wings studio outtake.[1] This song was the tenth track on the tape and the title was labeled as Relax In Bed.
This lead to the song being featured in two separate newsletters devoted to unofficial Beatles recordings, Scott Belmer featured it in 1987, and L.R.E. King subsequently included it in another newsletter in 1989 as a direct response to Scott Belmer's review of the song.
The song's earliest known online mention dates to sometime around 1998 when user Randwolf included it on his now-defunct website, which aimed at cataloging recordings of The Beatles.[2]
On March 10th, 2012, user Randwolf and band member Louis Portela identified the song as Relax In Red by X-Offender.
According to Louis Portela, the lead singer and bassist for X-Offender, the version of Relax in Red that bootleggers passed off is an earlier “live” recording the band did at the Record-O-Mat studios on Long Island, NY, as a submission to WBAB 102.3 station's Homegrown Hour show, while the official release is a more polished final take of the song.[3]These shows are likely the source from which bootleggers stole the song.
On July 13th, 2018, user BeatlesBootlegs9 posted the song to YouTube, along with all the other songs on the tape. The tape said the song was from 1978, meaning the other dates on the tape are likely incorrect.
Presumed lyrics[]
[Verse 1]
Searching through the darkness
Interested if someone's there
Moving like a hungry lion
Your lips could steal a kiss from death
[Chorus]
Relax in red
Relax in red
[Verse 2]
Still feeling undecided
No one knows you are awaiting death
I know you're feeling quite excited
But you're willing to relax instead
[Chorus]
Relax in red
Relax in red
[Verse 3]
A drink or two, no one remembers
You moved but with no success
Your love has starved for so many hours
Like a singer[?] dancing in distress
[Final Chorus]
Relax in red
Relax in red
[Outro]
Relax in red
Relax in red
Relax in red
Oh
Relax in red
