Early 2020s

The song was posted to YouTube on June 19th, 2020, by user Johnny Doe, saying in the video’s description:

“I recorded the song to a cassette from TV around the mid-2000's. I wrote "Popcorn" on the cassette label, but I don't know if this is the name of the band or the song, though I'd guess it has some relevance. The band looked young, late-teens or early-20s. It was a music video that I found randomly while going through the music video section of my cable provider's "on demand" service. The video didn't look high budget, but it didn't look like it was shot with someone's camcorder either. So, professionally shot, but limited budget.”

Over time, the song was reuploaded to YouTube by several users, such as Antonio's Remastered Works, Aero, Ofrix, No Background, S2h, 𝑀𝑟. 𝐶ℎ𝑖𝑝𝑠, LostwaveFinder, AlianTheObscure, Q, Rocketballboi, and multiple others, amassing over 7k views.

On November 7th, 2024, the OP said their TV’s cable provider was Comcast. They said they contacted Music Choice, who provided music channels for Comcast at the time, but they said they didn’t have records going back that far.[1]

2025

On June 27th, 2025, the OP posted a different, slightly higher quality, version of the song to YouTube, writing the same thing in the description.

Five days later, the OP responded to a comment by user TheBackyardOfLWA19 asking him how he found the higher quality recording, he said:

"A while back, I found the cassette that I'd misplaced. I had no cassette player, but I recently bought a cheap portable cassette player with a built-in speaker that I found at a discount store. I played the tape on it and recorded it with my phone. The volume wasn't very loud, but i used Audacity to raise the volume as much as I could without causing peaking."[2]

On November 1st, 2025, a channel for the song was created in the FMM Discord server after winning a channel poll, along with We Love Da Music, Summer On The Radio, No More Feelings, Key To My Heart, Ground Xero, Road To Nowhere, Keep Running So Everything Makes Sense, Getting High and I'm Going On.

On the same day, the song was identified by Discord user Antwan-965 as Popcorn by Clown[3] after he searched ""popcorn" alternative rock band" on YouTube, which led to him finding an upload of the music video.[4]

Later, on the 8th of November, the channel for the song would be deleted because of the suspicion it may be a hoax, as the audio in the YouTube upload sounded really similar, and the timeframe given by the OP was wrong.

Five days later, the song was fully confirmed to be a hoax when it was noticed that the dropouts in the music video upload and the original post were identical, and the OP blocked people who asked about it.

Presumed Lyrics

I've always seen you from a better view
And I've always seen the angel inside of you
Give my tears and my sorrow
Live today and die tomorrow
Woo!

You can't cry forever
No,
You can't cry forever

Knocking on an angel's door
It's me, the one you adore
That's right
And it's too late for a loving princess
Oh I'd rather sleep than sit [in bed].
Woo!

You can't cry forever
No,
You can't cry forever
Forever/Oh, there [ain't no like nowhere]

You can't cry forever
No,
You can't cry forever
