Making Dedication (formerly known as Personal) is a formerly unidentified post-punk song by Oregon based band First Person, released in 1989. The song is often compared to Joy Division.
Search History[]
The song was first posted to Facebook by Robi Knepp, stating that he recorded it off the radio station 105.1 FM (KXYQ), in late 1989 or early 1990. The song was aired during the new music hour, a show aired on Sunday's at midnight on KXYQ, and was hosted by a female DJ.
A band that was often suggested was Nero's Rome, and when James Angell was asked about the song, he simply replied with a thumbs up, but with no other info. However, when another band member was asked, they confirmed that it was not Nero's Rome, and they had never heard the song before.
Another often suggested band was Wild Swans, but the singer of the band, Paul Simpson, confirmed that it wasn't from them. The song was reposted by the Slicing Up Eyeballs Facebook page, but this provided no new leads.
Identification[]
On November 15th, 2021, the song was identified as Making Dedication by First Person. The song along with an accompanying performance video had been uploaded to YouTube just one week prior by Jordan Rzad, bass player for First Person.
Discord user MarkTrail had contacted SP Clarke, a music historian from Portland, who sent the song to several people. One of these people was First Person's guitarist Stu Carpenter who instantly recognized the song. He commented on the original Facebook post linking the upload, where it was discovered by u/sinkingshipsfan on reddit who posted a thread in R/Lostwave announcing the song had been solved.
First Person band members reunited and drummer Collin Colebank found the master tapes including a Digital Audio Tape containing a higher quality recording of Making Dedication. After a few weeks the song along with other previously unreleased First Person songs were uploaded to Spotify and other streaming services. On March 3rd, 2022, the song hit 1000 streams on Spotify.
Lyrics[]
[Verse 1]
Boy, that’s a nice tie
Both ally and embellishment
If you’ll pardon the outcry
I’ll pay you with a compliment
Just like this thread that garnishes your nape
Likewise my friend
You seem to decorate
[Chorus]
I may not be adept at making dedication
But to the brute and unfeeling
This is my retaliation
I was only trying to make the words more personal
[Verse 2]
You tidy the plight of life with your smile
And your big black shoes
They shine and beguile
When I was alone, you knew
When I was desperately alone
So were you
[Chorus]
I may not be adept at making dedication
And to those who claim it was not my place
What are the qualifications?
I was only trying to make the words more personal, personal
[Guitar solo]
[Verse 3]
I feel taller when I look up to you
And I think your tender ways are genuine
And when you make your big debut
You’ll be the tallest, kindest valentine
[Verse 4]
And although your well meaning words and manner
Are sadly taken for granted
I care about you
May I dare to say
I like shaking your hand
[Chorus]
I may not be adept at making dedication
But this little gift of song is my prized dissertation
I was only trying to make the world more personal, personal
Make the world more personal
[Outro]
I am proud to be
So proud
To be a victim of my feelings
So proud
So proud
Dedication!
Dedication!
