DISCLAIMER! Not to be confused with Digital Girl for it having a title that shares with this song’s placeholder name.
"Digital Girl" (also known as "Lost In The Code") was a formerly unidentified techno/uplifting trance song by the artist, "emails" (haditonvinyl). The song was initially made in 2012, or 2019,[1] but was later released in 2024. The song was allegedly from a Eurodance/Techno CD, but it was later revealed that the OP behind the song, turned out to be the creator behind the song, making the song a hoax.
Search History
2023
On September 30th, 2023, a WatZatSong user nicknamed "haditonvinyl" would upload a low-quality version of the song onto the website, stating that they found it on a Techno/Eurodance CD named "Techno Mix". They also stated:
"Sounds like a 90s or early 2000s "Barbie Girl" song. Found on my dad's old CD with similar music, but I can't find anything for this one".[2]
He then later posted a longer snippet on Vocaroo on the same day. When he was asked for the lyrics, he said:
"I've looked all over searching what I could make out of the lyrics but no results."
On October 3rd, 2023, haditonvinyl claimed that they had a higher quality version of the song, which would end up being posted on December 26th, 2023.
Soon, FL Studio was later found in the metadata of the song, which made some people suspect the song was a hoax. The OP responded said he used FL Studio to record the CD player, which made the hoax allegations slightly die down.
Over time, the song was reuploaded to YouTube by multiple users, such as KyterKay, Minish, Denou Music, Savannah Mapping, LostWave Songs, DrFrohman, Q, Aero, LostwaveFinder, No Background, Velinor, S2h, and multiple others, amassing over 900k views.
2024
On March 16th, 2024, the OP provided more information about the song, saying that his uncle managed to get in touch with some artists in a talent group from Malaga, who strongly remembers saving the complete song on an old CD.
A list of songs from 2012 was discovered, one of them named "Lost In The Code", attributed to an artist called: "emails". On April 3rd, 2024, Reddit user u/AdvantStory found a CD in a collection his dad got from an old co-worker, which was also attributed to emails, and wondered if this could be the same artist.
They later posted a video of them playing the CD. Upon playing the CD, it became apparent that Digital Girl was not on it, though the songs sounded similar.
Just 50 minutes later, u/NotSureHowBigYouAre responded to the post claiming they had found the songs on AdvantStory’s CD on Soulseek, with two songs attributed to emails. When investigating NotSureHowBigYouAre’s account, searchers found that the account had been inactive for five years and furthermore, they had a post on their profile called “OnVinyl” which was later deleted.
From here, the search focused on the hoax lead. Some clues in hadinonvinyl’s story included him giving three contradictory recording dates, and the fact that emails’ account on Instagram had changed its username five times.
Later, on April 4th, 2024, after receiving two Instagram DMs, the artist emails confirmed it was a demo of theirs and uploaded the full version of the demo along with the finished version to YouTube,[3][4] along with several other songs in the album “Digital World”. This satisfied the community and the song was briefly considered solved.
Hoax Discovery
However, just mere moments later, the song was discovered to have been a hoax after finding out haditonvinyl had used the name "emails" as an alias the entire time. Here are pieces of evidence that fully secure the song being a hoax (most points are in a Google Docs, you can read it here):
- He had admitted that they made the song from around ~2012 in a Discord call. Watch the full interview here.
- "FL Studio 21" was included in the song's metadata, a software used to create music. (he used it to export however)
- haditonvinyl had only one sample/only posted the song onto WatZatSong and nowhere else (usual hoaxer activity).
- haditonvinyl ripped the CD the same way you would rip a cassette tape or vinyl. CDs don’t need to be ripped that way. This was most likely inspired by William Paiva’s proof videos for Fond My Mind. (He did this because he doesn't have a CD player).
- Haditonvinyl was in FL Studio 21 while making the proof video (he did it to export the song).
- There are two mixes on the CD, one is the mix digital girl is from, the other is a snippet of Bolero Mix 16. The digital girl mix was made by their uncle according to OP. Why would they not only include an already existing mix, but a snippet of an already existing mix.
- All of the songs in the Digital Girl mix are from 1999-2003, but their uncle is said to have made the mix in 2009. It is pretty uncommon for mixers to only include songs from a certain, earlier time period unless they want to purposely invoke a certain time period.
- haditonvinyl claims to have flown from North America to Spain to “check hard drives” for the song but when he was in Spain, he found the name of the song written on a piece of printed out paper.
- haditonvinyl chronicles a trip to Spain to solve this lostwave (why didn’t they converse digitally?) where he searched with “other artists from the talent pool.” He cinematically names people in his life to us, like Santos, who is the head of the talent pool and has “archives from 2003-2017.” His updates throughout the entire trip strike people as hard to believe.
- While Haditonvinyl was in Spain he “took” (check Docs) this photo on March 30th 2024. It looked like this despite there being huge storms there that day.
- A user clicked on their profile to realize the account hadn’t been used for 5 years and had a post on the profile called “On Vinyl.” Later on, the “On Vinyl” post was deleted - but nothing else from their profile. On Soulseek, the user shadowfan77 had only ever posted 4 files, 3 of which were “Emails” songs. The Emails songs frequently went offline because the user kept logging off. Once users could download the files on Soulseek, they also realized the metadata differed between Soulseek and Mega files. It appeared that the Mega files directly posted to the subreddit had an added 2008 creation date. Original poster of the CD AvantStory deleted their account shortly after.
- The “emails” instagram account is fake. It changed its username 5 times. And their older name was “Whiskers”. “I had a blast doing my first ever live Whiskers set” -emails
- The final “Demo” was posted by a “fake haditonvinyl account” 3 days before the solve
- The suspected dates of Digital Girl provided by OP’s uncle were changed several times. (I can’t find the screenshot, but early on he references 2003. WatZatSong deleted a lot of early comments in that thread.)
- Emails created the YouTube account today (April 4, 2024) and uploaded the songs very promptly (within 30 minutes.) Within 5 minutes after upload, he posted a professional logo for his YouTube channel. Odd immediate behavior of an artist who just found out their songs have been lost and widely popular. He hasn’t had a social media presence in years, according to his other socials, but had this logo ready to go?
- No other tracks on the “album” Digital World have any vocals attached except Digital Girl. There is also no footprint whatsoever of this album or any of the songs existing online prior to 2024 despite their uncle supposedly getting the song online.
- The artwork features a futuristic city which was exactly predicted by his uncle months ago. The artwork can’t be found in any kind of reverse search. EmailMusic’s first communications tell the solver, in detail, that he made it during a specific time frame in 2012. So much of what Emailsmusic has produced so far seems to exist only to corroborate specific parts of OP’s story. UPDATE: It has been changed to a new version.
- For some reason, all of his posts would be immediately caught by Automod and removed before submission on /r/DigitalGirl. We would have to manually approve anything posted by him. In the beginning his account would show up as “suspended” as well, but didn’t at the end, so maybe he got it reversed.
OP has released the original Lost In The Code mix,[5] and the new song Analog Boy is in the works.[6]
A few months after the song was solved, Reddit user u/ThatPlant4695 in r/DigitalGirl seemingly posted the "full version" of Digital Girl, and said the song was by an artist named Dj Frenchie and the song was released in 2010. It was later debunked as it was just an AI extension of the song. Emails threatened legal action if the troll would not stop posting about it.[7]
Later haditonvinyl provided the “full story” of Digital Girl stating: [1]
“Realistically, I didn't expect there to be such a reaction like this. Digital Girl is an older project of mine that was never finished, and someone I know in person heard it while I was playing old demos for them. They said to drop everything I was doing and finish that. They were already familiar with lostwave since they knew about my Come Back remix, so the idea formed in their head to make a fake lostwave with this song. I didn't really care for DG. Like I said, it was a scrapped project from like 2019 when I first got my Digitech Talker and started making vocoder songs with it. So, I said sure. I didn't think much would come from it. The song wasn't all that special nor crazy like Fond My Mind or EKT. My task was to handle the audio stuff, and they would handle the story. I am shit with coming up with that stuff, so I just let them do their thing. I didn't have access to any of those accounts (all I had was an old instagram that I ended up using later when I changed the user to emails once I got fed up and wanted to release it on my own terms). Do you know why it took so long to release? Because it was never finished. The concept I made in 2019 and most of those files are lost, including the original recordings of the vocoder. I wanted to remake the entire song from beginning to end so it wouldn't be so dogshit, but they kept pressuring me with threats and made me keep it as is, with some new mixing and a proper intro/outro. This is why the "Lost In The Code" version came out. It was what was SUPPOSED to be the final. No one was supposed to hear that crappy snippet in the first place. Everything was rushed and messy because they wanted internet clout. They wanted to come out as my "curator/manager" and take credit for everything once Digital Girl blew up and was "everywhere." But that never happened. They rushed it, made up the worst possible bullshit stories, and when it backfired, left me to do damage control and handle it. Now suddenly I have access to all the accounts and I was "the only person behind this". Why didn't I just say this on stream? Because they were there with me. Every day was a living hell for me. They were too invested in this whole thing and would camp outside my house waiting for me to come out. I spent almost $1k in studio time and equipment because I just wanted the mix to at least sound decent before I released the demo (which everyone ended up hating, so that's an L I'm taking). But anyway, I have since then moved far away and cut all contact. I've also been taking legal action for the last few months and getting my stuff back (There's a lot more behind the scenes you guys don't know about, that I won't bother talking about since it's more serious and it's personal). Now that everything is pretty much resolved, I can come out and explain the entire situation without fear of them showing up and doing something. Whether people believe it or not, I don't care anymore. Y'all have been lied to beyond belief, so I dont blame the people who say this is bullshit. I continued emails because I had a chance to release music that I was always shy about to an audience who actually enjoyed it. I absolutely despise being in the spotlight, which is why I never bothered to promote any of my last projects or aliases. I always made music for myself and for fun. Publicity was never it for me. Telling people to get a job is my way of telling people who are obsessed with finding every little thing about me to fuck off and do something valuable with their time instead of worrying about some dude making music on the internet. It really is kinda funny how serious some people take this whole situation. Nothing was lost but some people's time. At the end of the day, yall still got to hear the song, even if it was just a hoax story. Getting death threats and doxxing attempts made on me when I didn't have much to do with the bs story has just been annoying, so that's why I just jokingly clap back at trolls. Posts on here calling for my public execution and overly paranoid posts saying I have more alts on here to make myself look good. Lol, I dont have the time nor the care to do that. I have a ton of stuff going on outside of the internet, so making fake accounts to give myself a good rep is silly. Also, something about me faking suicide or roleplaying as a dead guy? I made that BigYouAre account when I was like 13. Everyone thought the entire thing was an ARG. I had no idea there was a guy behind it who actually committed suicide. I only used that account because it was an existing account with karma that previously commented on the lostwave sub, meaning my posts wouldn't get taken down (I think they did anyways). For the people who were genuinely upset about being sent on a goose chase, I truly do apologize. It wasn't fair to have your time wasted, I get that. There's so much to this that I can't speak about atm due to legal reasons, but I hope this clears up most of the questions people had. I'm not asking for forgiveness or for anyone to feel bad for me. My situation has been dealt with, and I'm doing just fine. I don't worry about online stuff either, so the hate can keep coming, that's okay. I just wanted to at least explain wtf went on and why there are so many holes, even for a hoax story. I just hope people move tf on from this, it's not that deep. It's just a song at the end of the day. There's no need to be so fixated on it. I'm going to keep doing my thing IRL and release the original mix and whatnot once everything is ready.”
Lyrics
Dig-, dig-, in a digital land, she's trapped pixel by pixel
Digital girl, longing for something real
Beneath the glowing screen, her heart's in a swirl
Searching for love, a connection she can feel
Digital girl, lost in the code
Yearning for love in the universe she's known
She dreams of a user who can break the mold
Bring her to life where her heart can be shown
Digital girl
Digital girl
Digital girl, lost in the code
In a digital world, where her heart can be shown
Digital girl
Digital girl
Digital girl, lost in the code
In a digital world, where her heart can be shown
Digital girl
Digital girl
Digital girl, lost in the code
In a digital world, where her heart can be shown
