Lingua Franca-1 is a debut studio Jazz album by Japanese band EP-4, released in 1983 on the label Columbia.
It contains two formerly unidentified songs originally posted by YouTuber Ivo Peeters: The Frump Jump and Similar.
History[]
In 1980, the already assembled band decided to create their first album. After 3 years of hard work, the band recorded 8 tracks, which were greenlit for sale by the Columbia label. Initially, Satou planned to name the album Death to the Emperor Showa, but due to censorship restrictions, the release had to be renamed Lingua Franca‑1.
To promote the record, the band's leader resorted to non-standard methods: for example, he illegally posted fake posters about non-existent concerts in four cities on the same day in the Tokyo districts of Shibuya and Harajuku.
After great success in his homeland, the album was re-released in Switzerland in 2018.
The album became a landmark document of the Japanese experimental scene, demonstrating a unique synthesis of avant‑garde approach and pop sensibility.

EP-4[]
EP‑4 is a Japanese experimental no wave/avant‑funk band formed in 1980 in Kyoto. The founding member was Kaoru Satou; the classical line-up also included Yuji Kawashima (keyboards), Tatsuo Koki (guitar), Sanjo-dori Street (drums), Yoon Tsubotaji (percussion) and Kou Sakuma (bass). The band sought to rethink rock music through intensive electronic processing, actively used voice effects and synthesizers, combining funk, new wave and psychedelic sound. Their aesthetics were characterized by futurism and deliberate "extreme refinement" of sound, which set the band apart in the underground scene of the early 1980s. The band is currently still active.
