On June 10th, 2023, user Kenny Cathead posted a one hour and 25 minute video titled “Unknown” to YouTube. It featured many snippets recorded off of the radio in the 1980s. The song played 30 minutes and one second into the video.
Kenny reposted the song to his WatZatSong account NY80sTapes on June 27th, 2023, giving it the placeholder title "How Happy Life Can Be" and a Vocaroo link to the full snippet. The song was recorded off of a radio station in New York or New Jersey.
Over time, the song was reuploaded to YouTube by several users, such as Barni, Mike Worst, AlianTheObscure, SpikeytheCactus,𝑀𝑟. 𝐶ℎ𝑖𝑝𝑠, KyterKay, S2h, Q, and multiple others, amassing over 10k views.
On November 24th, 2023, on the FMM Discord thread for the songs he posted, Kenny said that he wasn’t the person who recorded the tapes, but instead a friend who was trying to make a sound collage, but he recorded a few things.[1]
Theories and Leads
A WatZatSong user suggested the song could by They Might Be Giants. The User spoke to CapitalQ, who is known in the TMBG fandom to be the most knowledgeable fan, but CapitalQ disproved it, being one of their songs.
The same user suggested it could be an early TMBG demo, similarly to how another song posted by Kenny turned out to be a demo by the band.
