Ground Xero is an unidentified grunge/alternative rock song misattributed as a demo by Mark Wakefield, who was a former member of the band Linkin Park.
Search History[]
2000s[]
The oldest known mention of the song is from May 23rd, 2004, from a forum named lpassociation.com, where an user named Neil shared a list of songs they downloaded, and one of them was "Wakefield - Ground Xero".[1]
On April 14th, 2005, the song was uploaded to a Linkin Park fan site called chestersings.com after the song was provided to them by user Astat. They had found it on the peer-to-peer file sharing website Kazaa with the filename "Wakefield - Ground Xero".[2]
The song was reuploaded to YouTube on April 29th, 2008 by user theoryoflinkin, the video also claimed it was a demo by Mark Wakefield. They likely also downloaded it off of a filesharing site.
On November 20th, 2009, co-founder of Linkin Park, Mike Shinoda, commented on the song on the Linkin Park Message Boards saying "Nope, not real. Doesn't even sound like us LOL".[3]
However, Mike probably thought that people were calling this song a Xero demo instead of a Mark Wakefield one, which led to debate the authenticity of this song.
2010s-2020s[]
On August 18th, 2018, YouTube channel Linkin Park Live Archive uploaded the song. They were skeptical about the authenticity of the song as they wrote in the description "A supposed solo song by Mark Wakefield".
On December 15th, 2020, Reddit user 483894387YES76 made a post about the song to the r/Lostwave subreddit, asking who it was made by. They mentioned that "Ground Zero" might be the name of the song, instead of "Ground Xero".
In some point of 2022, Linkin Park Live Archive updated the description of their upload, claiming that it was confirmed not to be Mark Wakefield on vocals, remaining the actual artist unknown.
Over time, the song was reuploaded to YouTube by several other users, such as MistaEgg, Ofrix, Q, Zumi, 𝑀𝑟. 𝐶ℎ𝑖𝑝𝑠, LostwaveFinder, AlianTheObscure, and multiple others, amassing over 7k views.
On November 1st, 2025, a channel for the song was created in the FMM Discord server after winning a channel poll, along with We Love Da Music, Summer On The Radio, No More Feelings, Key To My Heart, Popcorn Tape, Road To Nowhere, Keep Running So Everything Makes Sense, Getting High and I'm Going On.
False leads[]
Single Bullet Theory[]
A YouTube channel of a supposed band that claims it was an unreleased song of them from 1996. Due to the lack of information of the band and their label, along with the fact that their other songs are in a worse audio quality, this is most likely a hoax lead.
Warzone[]
Some lyrics websites have labeled this song as "Ground Zero" by a hardcore punk band named Warzone. This is a real song that has nothing to do with "Ground Xero".
Brady Wenzel[]
A Spotify user who uploaded this song along with some Linkin Park and System Of A Down demos. He obviously didn't make the song.
Lyrics[]
Don't worry about the time,
Just watch the sun set.
I keep my feelings bottled up,
things that I've regret.
Oh can it be,
Up to me right now?
Everything's so lovely,
in the sky right now.
I want to take it back,
but I don't know how.
Can you chase the rainbow?
To find it's end.
Take me to your Ground Xero.
Back again.
I simply wish that I,
could feel the way you do.
I just outta again.
Standin' next to you
Gone overboard,
and restore my pain.
Everything's so lovely,
in the sky right now.
I want to take it back,
but I don't know how.
Can you chase the rainbow?
To find it's end.
Take me to your Ground Xero.
Back again.
