Cause Vertical (formerly known as Your Flame or Your Red Desire) is a formerly unidentified ethereal wave song by New York-based band The Sirens, recorded around 1991-1992.

Search History[]

2010s[]

The song was first posted to the New Wave Outpost forums by user Guglielm on August 23rd, 2012 along with multiple other unknown songs. He didn’t provide any information about the songs.

On April 20th, 2013, Guglielm commented on the WFMU.org page for a playlist made by user Bob Brainen, saying the songs were recorded sometime between 1981-1984 or 1991-1993 off of WFMU.

The song was reposted to WatZatSong on July 18th, 2013, without providing any additional information about it.

On August 1st, 2014, Guglielm reposted the song to WatZatSong again. He said it was tagged as Cause Vertical(e) - Siren.

2020s[]

On March 26th, 2023, Guglielm confirmed that he digitized all of his cassette tapes with the songs on them in the early 90s, and no longer had any of them anymore.

On June 25th, 2024, Guglielm commented on the second repost and said that the tag is most likely a mishearing of This Mortal Coil - Song To The Siren.

On January 30th, 2025, user Marktrail discovered a band called The Sirens, which sounded nearly identical, their name matched the tag, and WFMU has played their songs before, so members were contacted and a copy of their album was bought

On February 26th, 2025, Discord user BackToDecember contacted drummer of the band, Jonathan Kane, he responded, and said the song was by the band, and it might’ve been recorded in Paris, but he didn’t remember the title.

Two days later, Johnathan also said the song was titled Cause Vertical, recorded around 1991-1992, and the meaning of the title was “some metaphorical gobbledygook about moving/looking/striving upwards I would imagine”.

Lyrics[]

You think of me as your fire
You dream of my red desire
You think of me as your flame
You dream of me as your body’s pyre

You want me to walk on water
You wish that I would wear wings
You want me to carry your sorrows
You wish I’d forget everything

But I dream of endless oceans
And black skies shot with blood
I see me and you cut a dangerous bridge
That moves between darkness and sight

You think of me as your fire
You dream of my red desire
You think of me as your flame
You dream of me as your body’s pyre

You think of me as your fire
You dream of my red desire
You think of me as your flame
You dream of me as your body’s pyre

You think of me as your flame
You think of me as your flame

The Sirens[]

The Sirens was a goth rock and post-punk band from New York, USA. They only have one album to their name.

The band consisted of Chris Cunningham (vocals, keyboards), Dina Emerson (vocals), and Jonathan Kane (drums).

In 1990, they released their first and only album, self titled The Sirens.

Sometime between 1991-1992, they recorded this song, but never released it. It’s possible they have more unreleased demos, but that's not confirmed.

Sometime after, they disbanded.
